I was really amazed to find that Keanu Reeves' legendary incompetence as an actor was not the main thing that ruined this film. In fact looking back that was a really minor factor in this movie being the pile of shit that it is. I'm guessing that the confusion-inducing script and plot were some sort of device for making the viewer feel like they were on a drug trip right along with the characters, and if you're going to use such a device you need to make damn sure it stays captivating and doesn't alienate your audience. I felt quite alienated. And you know, I was never a big fan of David Lynch movies or The Naked Lunch, but those films accomplished much more with such devices. A Scanner Darkly was just not very compelling no matter how hard it tried. I'd recommend putting it on while you're doing your taxes or chatting online because it works fine for some background static while you're doing something else, but it's just not a movie you want to try and focus on much. I did enjoy this film somewhat, but I think that's just because to me sci-fi is like sex with hookers: Sometimes you get your money's worth, sometimes you don't, but either way it's better than not getting any at all.
