All good things come to an end eventually, and the genius of the Coen brothers is no exception. Anyone who's created such amazing films as Fargo, The Big Lebowski and Oh Brother Where Art Thou deserve to drop a stink-log once in a while and be forgiven. But having already forgiven them for "No Country for Old Men," I'm calling this doody pile entitled "Burn After Reading" proof that the Coens are hitting their burn out years, where they try to milk a little more creative cream out of their tiring, middle-aged minds but just end up serving us cow plop. I like complex characters, and maybe that's what they were attempting here.
But none of them are struggling between doing the right thing and screwing people over like a complex character would, they're pretty much all just walking, talking sacks of shit for whom the only right choices are the ones that get them what they want. So instead of the same old good versus evil formula we get all bad characters, all just the greater and lesser of amoral human beings, as if somehow that’s anything more than just a mildly interesting novelty. And we don't even get the satisfaction of seeing the worst of them get their comeuppance. It’s somewhat like "No Country" where evil triumphs, except that in “Burn After Reading” it’s more like shitbags triumphing over shitbags. I think this is supposed to be black comedy, and though I could sense their attempts at humor I didn't laugh much. What happened to that Big Lebowski sense of humor? I think the Coens are tired and just cashing in on their name now, and I also think that if they aren't going to give us any more cult classics then they should just hang it up.
