This is a Las Vegas movie, and I’m not sure it even meant to touch on the controversy of the tolerated prostitution there. But having lived in that highly disturbing city for a while, for me this movie really showed both sides of the issue which are quite simple. On one hand, ew! Ick! fucking disgusting! What an horrible way to make a living! And how embarrassing for the families of the girls who choose such a life, especially for the many who still cling to antiquated myths of what a sad and shameful profession it is, only ever chosen by drug addicts and sex abuse victims. The other more truthful and practical side of it is that these girls make so damn much money that it’s starting to attract unbelievably beautiful women, some of whom you’d think could marry rich if they wanted to (and then only have one, very well paying john.) When I was in Vegas prostitution was in your face, everywhere. There were giant pornographic billboards some of which were on wheels, and there was a large section of the phone book dedicated to escorts. On the strip there were illegal aliens doing nothing but handing out little cards with mostly naked escorts on them and their phone numbers, and perhaps most disturbing was the escort catalogs in plastic red boxes near bus stops and in front of grocery stores. Any kid could get their hands on as much free porn as they wanted anywhere in town. It’s so common that it seems normal there, same as with gambling, drugs, violence, corrupt cops…you name it. Live in Vegas long enough and you become desensitized to all that stuff including prostitution. It’s like it's just another tourism job and it almost seems like there’s really no shame in it either because they make so damn much money. I mean after all, that’s what Vegas is all about, right? Making money? If it weren’t for the unbelievably great hustle no one would want to live in that shit hole, because without the casinos and the girls that town is just one big strip mall, corporate crap up and down literally every street. Every neighborhood is cookie cutter houses in gated subdivisions surrounded on all sides by corporate franchise shit as far as the eye can see and it just fucking sucks, sucks, sucks to the nth degree fucking SUCKS!
Prostitution really is a de facto legitimate career there chosen by women from all backgrounds, it’s not just the last resort of addicts and the sexually abused. But in spite of all that this movie still tries to portray it as a terrible and desperate choice. And I for one think that’s pretty obvious bullshit. The main character unintentionally says it all when she says that she can either work for a month at IHOP waiting tables or she can fuck 8 guys over a weekend and make the same amount of money. You don’t have to be a sex abuse victim to be allured by that. That fact by itself is more than enough for a woman to overcome whatever shame and indignity there is in becoming a hooker, because let’s face it folks, there are a lot of women in this world that truly love money that much. And from an even broader perspective, the truth is that working for the man, no matter what profession you’re in, is like being a whore on some level. The unfortunate reality of being an employee is that someone is using you to get rich, that’s their only interest in you, no matter how much phony concern they invest in you in hopes that you'll feel a sense of belonging and stick around. So what’s the difference I say? You can whore out your back or your sex organs, either way you’re getting screwed, and the latter pays a lot more for a fraction of the time so fuck it. All that money and time off for certain help take the sting out of whatever psychological consequences will result. And I guarantee it’s noowhere near as psychologically damaging as wearing a Taco Bell uniform, not by a long shot.
