I didn't like this film as much as I expected to with all the hype surrounding it. I was good though. It grabs on to your emotions and takes them for a ride just like a good movie should. And the acting is very believable. My only real complaint is that I just hate subtitles. And the only thing I hate more than movies with subtitles are movies with subtitles that I didn't expect to have subtitles. And even worse is a movie with subtitles too small to read without getting uncomfortably close to the TV. And even worse still is a movie that's half English and the other half subtitles. That's just stupid, especially when there are parts of the movie when it makes sense that they'd be speaking English (like when talking to American tourists,) and other parts where it doesn't make sense at all (like everywhere else English is spoken in the film.) They should either have them speak English through the whole film for our benefit or they should have subtitles through the whole film, mixing it up is really dumb. What ever happened to voice overdubbing? I would much rather have cheesy English overdubs than subtitles any day, like those Spanish overdubbed movies on cable. Whatever happened to that? We haven't seen much English overdubbing since Kung Fu Theater, it's like someone arbitrarily decided at some point that all foreign movies would have subtitles, but all the movies we export would have foreign language overdubs. I don't get it. Anyway in spite of the subtitle confusion Slumdog Millionaire is a movie that won't leave you feeling gypped, and that's as good a compliment as I can give anything.
