OK, ever since I shat in great proportions all over movies that claim to be black comedies but are really just chick flicks with some dark humor thrown in, I've had a hankerin' for some real black comedy. It's kind of rare and getting rarer, it's just not a very popular genre, my guess is that most people either don't get it or don't like it. Fair enough. But thank goodness there are enough sick bastards like me who enjoy this kind of thing, otherwise we wouldn't have classics like Freeway, Pulp Fiction, Evil Dead 2 and everything Monty Python ever did. Anyway, Otis is not great black comedy, but at least it completely fits within the genre unlike Choke. There's no serious love story going on between gags, it's a story that even seems to mock itself at times. The feeling I get from it sort of reminds me of Ed and His Dead Mother, or The Trouble With Dick if anyone remembers those films, it's on the silly side of the black comedy spectrum. And it's very entertaining up until about the last quarter of the film when the ridiculousness of it all starts getting tiring, you want it just to get on with it and wrap up. It's almost like you can really get lost in the story until that last half hour or so when it just goes off the scale stupid, then your disbelief starts wearing thin and you realize you're watching a movie that you really wish would end soon. So is this movie worth watching? If you like black comedy, yes, because there's just not enough of it out there for you to be too picky. And as an added bonus you get to see the girl who played Chrissy Seaver on Growing Pains give an obese man a hand job! Enjoy.
